1) Maya Memsaab

A movie about an insatiable married woman, who seduces a young lover and many more was too hot for the Censor Board back then. The reason for the trouble: Shah Rukh’s nude scene! As if there weren’t enough reasons to hate the Censor Board already!

2) Fire

This Deepa Mehta masterpiece released in 1996, was simply too much for the Censors! It featured a lesbian relationship between two sisters-in-law. Game Of Thrones, you ain’t got nothing!

3) Sins

This Shiney Ahuja flick irked a lot of Catholic religious leaders as the film showcased a Catholic Priest’s romantic involvement with the woman. But after an ‘A’ certification, and some major cuts, the film was finally released for viewing.

4) Satyam Shivam Sundaram

Zeenat Aman, clad in an extremely revealing wet white cloth was the reason why this film’s release was stalled! But its strong commentary on spiritual and physical love wowed the masses, and till date, it is one of the most revered films of all time!

5) Jism

The film which made every couple wish for a chemistry like John and Bipasha’s was in troubled waters because of a few “passionate” dialogues between the duo! In 2015, songs about drugs are broadcast all over the TV! Way to go Censor Board. NOT!

6) Jism 2

Featuring the bold Sunny Leone.

7) Ram Teri Ganga Maili

Not only did it feature Mandakini in a wet white robe, which seems like it was a crowd favourite back then, but it also featured a scene where she is breastfeeding a baby! The Censor Board opposed the release of the film, but director Raj Kapoor did not leave his stand. The result? Filmfares for Mandakini and Raj Kapoor, amongst others!

8) Bandit Queen

Shekhar Kapur’s National Award winner was very close to being completely banned forever, because of its brutal gang rape scene. Not much has changed since 1994, because even today, rape is still swept away under the rug the same way the Censor Board tried to ban this movie for its rape scene. Wake up, guys!
